Description
This is a painting of my Great-Grandfather, Ernest Gilbert, that my mom painted. It comes with a signed, handwritten letter from her describing some of the history of Ernest. The painting is 16" x 20" acrylic on canvas. Below is the letter you will be recieving. Great addition to any geneology society or historical museum. I painted this picture from a photograph of my grandfather Ernest Gilbert. I don't remember how I came in to possesion of the photo, but it appears to me to be a mugshot. My grandfather was convicted of murder sometime in the late 1940's or early 1950's. I've tried to find out more about the case, but I only have some information that was given ot me on a geneology web site. It states the following on this escape from prison: Kentucky New Era Hopkinsville, Kentucky July 21,1953 Convicts Escape Lagrange Ky (AP) July 21 Two convicts identified as Robert Lee Ritchett and Ernest Gilbert fled the stockade at the state reformatory yesterday. Ritchett was serving a three-year term for grand larceny in Pulaski County while Gilbert was sentenced to 18 years for voluntary manslaughter in Carter County. I was also given this information from a book written by George Wolfford titled Carter County A Pictorial History pg94: Ernest Gilbert, an escaped killer, was captured in a tent in a cemetery near Grahn in June 1952 after succesfully hiding out in the rough country six years. It was told to me by family members that he had escaped from prison several times. I would love to find out who he murdered and why. My grandfather lived in Carter County for a large portion of his life. He passed away while living in Lima, Ohio in 1987. signed, Patty Gilbert
