Hither and Yon View Feedback Email hitherandyon Aloha This listing is for the pictured Silver Gau Pendant from the himalayas View All Items View Auctions Only View Store Items From the himalayan kingdom of Nepal, this is a beautiful 92.5 silver gau pendant set with a great example of turquoise stone. The pendant measures approximately 1 5/8" high x 1 1/4" wide. Gau amulets were traditionally worn by pilgrams and used to carry an image of Buddha, prayers, or Tibetan medicine. This Ghau comes inside the pictured stone bowl. The bowl is carved from himalayan marble in northern India and measures 2" wide. A beautiful unique set brought from Hither and Yon! Turquoise is a porous, non-translucent, semi-precious stone found in solid masses in the cracks of aluminum-rich rock. It is actually a hydrated phosphate of copper & aluminum and can range in color from sky blue to green. The name Turquoise is possibly from the French word pierre turquin for "blue stone", or from Turquie, the french word for Turkey where it is thought to have been discovered. The oldest turquoise mines are located in Alimersai Mountain in Persia (Iran) and in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Turquoise is found in desert regions worldwide. According to legend, Native Americans believed if turquoise was affixed to their bow, the arrow would always hit its mark. They also believed turquoise would bring happiness and good fortune. Turquoise has a hardness of 6 and a specific gravity of 2.60-2.85. Turquoise is the national gemstone of Iran and is one of December's birthstones. U.S. shipping is $5.00 by priority mail, with optional insurance for $1.30 and of course we combine shipping charges for multiple auctions.
