This CD is a very useful tool for anyone researching any ancestral area in Ireland. It can be adopted and adapted for research in any county Resource County Roscommon CD, 2nd edition, 2007, compiled by John Hunter. Reviewed by Tom Norton The second edition of this CD was launched in Heritage Week, August 2007, at the Roscommon County Library Headquarters by Fr Francis Beirne, in the presence of the author, John Hunter, the Mayor of Roscommon, TDs, other local dignitaries and a substantial crowd. The CD, an amalgamation and update of two separate CDs, consists of a number of databases, source material and maps of use to local and family historians and is the fruits of Australian John Hunter’s efforts – only partly successful - over many years of trying to trace his family ancestors in Roscommon. In the course of his endeavours he learned many useful lessons and collected a vast amount of material – about 2,000 pages of it – which is presented on this CD. Although the CD is specifically targeted at County Roscommon it can be adopted and adapted for research in any county. The CD also lists the contents of useful online databases, for example, the Leitrim-Roscommon genealogy website. The CD and its predecessors have garnered many plaudits both locally and internationally and it would be supererogatory to add to them here. I will mention some features that have not been highlighted previously. The CD is not only a valuable collection of databases but also contains practical details on how to go about the task of tracing Roscommon ancestors. It also carefully explains the meaning of administrative divisions which the researcher must know about, such as ‘barony’, ‘civil parish’, ‘Catholic parish’, ‘townland’ etc. There is a detailed 26 page account of John Hunter’s attempts to trace his Roscommon ancestors, and there are template forms for recording family details. Another noteworthy feature of the CD is that it gives costs and suggestions for its use in schools: research on local and family history, use of the Internet, presentations on ancestors and the local area, encompassing written & spoken English, Geography, the use of maps, and teaching research skills. Examples are given of actual research projects.
