I believe it is called a Commander's Chapeau and dates from the 1800s. The ostrich plume feather is great! It is in such fine condition. It was protected for about 100 years by the leather case. I actually thought about listing this item as a wonderful leather case that happened to have a fancy hat in it. At any rate, you get them both if you win this auction. This hat fits me well. I usually wear a size 7 1/4. I don't know what "Portland" this came from. It was part of a Texas estate, and we don't have a Portland down here. The Portland patches are sewn on and could probably be easily removed and replaced with your own patch. But it is a fine Masonic regalia relic, and would be a great addition to any Masonic collection. See our other auctions for lots more fine junk.
