Screenplay Summary: You are about to experience a horrific journey from childish innocence to the maturity of man's ultimate inhumanity; an odyssey from purity and light to complete moral darkness.  You are about to experience a misguided odyssey, began by a man some called a genius and others called a demon. To most Cambodians, he was known as Brother Number 1. On this journey, the angels of innocence are slaughtered, and man’s moral compass is without direction. You are in a time and a place like no other.  It is a time when speaking a foreign language is a capital offence.  You are in a place where reading a novel is worthy of torture and death.  You are in a time when there are no fathers, mothers, children, parents or cousins.  You are in a place where compassion leads to execution. Listen carefully.  In the silence of your heart, you will hear the cries of children having their skulls crushed against the Chinkiri tree drowning out the groans of young men suffering tortures of heartless brutality.  Open your ears and your Godly conscience; and listen to the screams of women being raped, sodomized and murdered being muffled by the deafening silence that befalls after a summary execution. The horror you will witness is not in the details.  The horror is in the knowing, knowing that the purest heart can become the domicile of hell. The horror is in the knowing how easily the human mind can be transformed to an engine of human annihilation. The horror is in the knowing that during this four year period, the most grotesque human soles were housed in children. In this time and place between one and two million Cambodians suffered death from torture, starvation, and horrific, malicious execution under the Khmer Rouge. These are the sounds of, The Democratic Republic of Kampuchea.  It is April 17, 2005. Welcome to the first days of Year Zero. The Cambodian Genocide of the 1970’s is the most under reported tragedy in the history of mankind. For four years, the Khmer Rouge imprisoned, tortured and eventually murdered over 2,000,000 Cambodians.  It all started on April 17, 1975 with evacuation of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, and the forced transition of an entire society backwards in time to create a Utopian, communist, agrarian society. Year Zero begins with the innocence of two young boys in their Cambodian Floating Village and follows their journey from innocent wisdom through Khmer Rouge indoctrination and the blackening of their soles.  During the course of this odyssey, Narith Makara, a Cambodian teenager, the screenplay’s central figure, comes of age through his infliction of violence and domination opposed to adolescent folly.  His enthusiasm and depraved valor eventually fall victim to the paranoid driven mores of the Khmer Rouge. The countless scenes of torture contrast greatly to the innocent village life of the opening scene. Rape and murder are not violence for violence sake, but rather pinnacle the horror of man’s inhumanity to man and the ease of which innocent minds, in mass, succumb to immoral patriotic fervor to a commit mass and unbridled brutality.  Perhaps the most horrific aspect of this violence is the fact that it is perpetrated by teenagers, given the he responsibility of men, whose blind devotion to the philosophy of malicious and merciless madman (Pol Pot) creates mass malevolence only seen once in the course of human existence (The Nazi Holocaust).
