We are a small, two person business and we have been making individually crafted items together for over a decade. When you buy this book we will be making it especially for you!We have made this journal from a single piece of vegetable tanned leather. The wraparound cover encloses the paper and is held in place with thonging that we make from the same leather.We make the 'ghost' fern leaf effect, which goes all the way around the book, using leather dyes that we make ourselves. We lay real fern leaves onto the leather and apply the clear dye, as it dries it develops like a photograph, leaving the ghost of the fern leaf behind. We have adapted this method from an old book-binding technique and our inspiration for this design comes from cave painting techniques and early photography.It is 16cm x 11cm x 3cm (6.25 x 4.25 x 1.25 inches) and contains approximately 200 pages (400 sides) of A6 sized, unlined, recycled, paper. We permanently bind the handcut pages into this book in a traditional binding style using waxed cord. No glue is used, so the spine of the book cannot be broken.The paper that we use is a natural, off-white, oatmeal colour with faint flecks. It has a matt appearance and is slightly textured. It takes a fountain pen without 'bleeding' and is a good mid-tone for sketching.We're proud to say that our paper is 100% recycled from unbleached post-consumer waste, which saves water, energy and trees. It has won awards for it's high environmental standards and is endorsed by Greenpeace. Best of all it's a great paper of archival quality which means that it will last for hundreds of years. This is great if you're planning on leaving your words for future generations!It makes a wonderful journal; diary; sketchbook; gardeners notebook; etc. This is the earthy alternative to the mass produced books generally available. This makes a unique gift, especially for people who love nature, and is the perfect size and sturdy enough to take on your travels or out into the wild. The leather is a natural material, the dyes are handmade and the fern leaves used to create the pattern are real, this means that no two journals will be the same.
