I was delighted to have it for myself a few years ago, to add to my collection. Charlie is the name of the man who use to own the lamp and he was quite the man! He was a very religous man who always carried with him a black bible in his hand.  Charlie was a war veteran and often spoke of how he seen angels on the battlefields as a soldier. Charlie was an honest man and never lied. He was very old when he died...in his nineties! He was also quite physically active for an old timer. He loved the outdoors and was a real pioneer at heart. He would often go into the bush to cut and gather firewood..and of course chop it for his fireplace. One day as Charlie was pulling his wagon full of wood back to his house, he heard some rustling in the bushes. He thought it was probably just deer as they were in abundance at the time in that area. Shortly after he turned around to the noises behind him he seen a large black mass of dark black fur coming through the trees. It was a bear! And it was a big bear..a black bear to be precise. Estimated weight of approx 600 pounds. Charlie could smell it as it was quite rancid odor. He wasnt normally afraid of any animals, but this bear seemed extra curious and was grunting at him and snorting, and was on his trail. He was scared and wasnt quite sure what to do. He let go the handle of the wagon and started to run quickly. Sure enough the bear started after him in hot pursuit. Charlie thought maybe he shouldnt have ran and that it might have made things worse, but at this stage all he could think of was surviving. Out of breath he knew he would never outrun the bear to make it home, so he did the next thing he could think of.......he ran to a tree and started climbing. He knew bears could climb too, so he figured he just might be out of luck. He was half way up the tree and the bear was gaining and started up the tree after him as well. Charlie couldnt go any higher, and so he did the only thing he knew he was good at and that was praying! He prayed and he prayed and he prayed...and he prayed hard. An angel had appeared to Charlie and told him not to worry, that he would be saved. He looked down at the bear that was now half way up the tree. A large branch broke and snapped and the bear fell...and it fell hard and hit the ground. Charlie remained in the tree for a good twenty minutes later until he was sure of the bears death. When he came down he poked and prodded at the bear with a stick to make sure it was dead. The angel again appeared and told him to take the claw of the right hand of the bear and to keep it of a memory of this day, and to go home and build an altar to the lord, and to use an oil lamp to communicate with the angel. "When i am with you the light will flicker he said unto him". Charlie went home to see what he could find to make an altar. His wife was already deceased and he went through some of her knick knacks in some of her old trunks. He dug out this small brass lamp, a cloth, 2 marble slabs and 2 cups to rest upon them...one for himself and one for an offering. This is where he gave thanks to the lord for all the little miracles and big ones that came upon him during his lifetime. He prayed every day and gave thanks until he passed. Charlie had a strange connection, and yet a powerful one with God and the angels. His last items were highly sought after by his church and friends.
