In 1987 Ferrari, the longest established team in Formula 1, was celebrating their 40th consecutive season in Grand Prix racing. The team certainly had something to prove, as they had not won a race since the Nürburgring in August 1985. 1986 had not been a good year for the Scuderia and John Barnard had been hired as Technical Director. Working from his Guildford Technical Office, Barnard came on board after the F1/87 project had been started but played a considerable role in the final touches and development of the car. The Ferrari technical team was very strong with Harvey Postlethwaite, Gustav Brunner and ex-Renault men Jean-Jacques His and Jean-Claude Migeault also in the squad. In the first eight months the new Ferrari engine underwent continuous development and performance was steadily increased. In 1987 Formula 1’s turbocharged engines were producing extraordinary power. The Ferrari F1/87 delivered around 1000hp in qualifying trim and nearly 900hp on race settings. The engines ran with a maximum turbo boost pressure of 4 bar (58 psi). In 1988 this would be reduced to 2.5 bar and in 1989 turbos were banned altogether and Formula 1 returned to naturally aspirated engines with a displacement of 3,500cc. Ferrari’s drivers for the 1987 season were Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto, and the car proved promising at the beginning of the season. Berger finished fourth at Rio de Janeiro and Alboreto finished third at Imola. At Monaco Alboreto was again third with Berger fourth. A revised aero package was introduced at Hockenheim and whilst qualifying performances were dramatically improved, a string of failures frustrated the team during the middle part of the season. As the season drew to a close Ferrari dramatically turned their fortunes around. At Estoril in Portugal, Berger put his Ferrari on pole and led much of the race. On lap 68 of 70 Berger was being pushed hard by Prost in the McLaren. Berger’s tyres were worn and he tried just a little too hard to fend off Prost and spun. Prost took the lead but Berger recovered and while crestfallen not to have won Berger nevertheless managed to smile through his disappointment. At Suzuka in Japan, Berger once again took pole and this time he made no mistakes and achieved a resounding victory. The last race of the year was the Australian Grand Prix at Adelaide. Berger was on pole again and led Alboreto home to a superb Ferrari one-two. The Ferrari F1/87 presented here, chassis number 099, was new at Imola where it was used as a spare. It was the spare car again at Detroit and was raced by Gerhard Berger at the French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. Afterwards this chassis was used extensively by both drivers in testing and development work. Towards the end of 1987 the car was also used to develop the semi-automatic gearbox which John Barnard had suggested and Ing. De Silvestri had designed. In 1989 chassis 099 was sold by the factory to Jean Blaton of Brussels, a former racing driver who successfully campaigned sports cars in the 1950s and 60s under the pseudonym “Beurlys.” In 1999 the car was consigned by Blaton to the Poulain-Le Fur and Sotheby’s Auction at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. 1987 was the last full season that Enzo Ferrari would witness; he died the following year. After Berger’s first victory for Ferrari at Suzuka in Japan, he said. “I was under less pressure than I was when I spun away the lead in Portugal, but I’m very pleased that I’ve made up for that mistake. I’m sure the Old Man will sleep more easily over the winter now that we’ve won again at last!” Just seven Ferrari F1/87 cars were built and only six survive. Numbered 095 to 101, this car, the fifth built, is an extremely rare example of this turbo charged Ferrari Formula 1 car. Beautifully proportioned, this wonderful Grand Prix car is very user-friendly and relatively easy to run. It would of course be welcome at all the most important Ferrari events worldwide and make an important addition to the Ferrari Corse Clienti Programme.
