Making its competition debut on an Alfa Romeo at the 24 Hours of Spa in 1932, the iconic cavallino rampante first adorned a Ferrari in 1947 and has since become synonymous with the very best in Italian sports car construction. Originally used only to identify factory team cars from the Scuderia Ferrari, in later years it has become a symbol of the performance, design, and image of Ferrari, fitted to street cars as a reminder of their racing heritage. Enzo Ferrari was 90 years old when the F40 was announced – a halo car whose image would be suitable to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary in 1987. Enzo Ferrari’s instructions had been clear: “Build a car to be the best in the world”. There is little doubt that the engineers delivered exactly what Il Commendatore asked. Introduced in Europe in 1987, Ferrari’s new supercar was a shock to the senses. An engineering tour de force, the F40 combined raw-edged radical styling with state of the art technology in engine, body, and chassis design. Without question, driving an F40 is a visceral experience, hammering the senses with brutal acceleration, razor-sharp reflexes, and a howling exhaust note that for many aficionados is music to the ears. The experience is truly addictive. More than anything, it is the car’s purity of purpose that underlines the experience. Few concessions are made to creature comforts – no radio, no carpets, no power windows, not even door panels. Instead, racing seats with red Nomex covers clarify the point – which is, of course, absolute, uncompromising performance. The wedge-shaped exterior is as purposeful as it is attractive, constructed of lightweight composites and designed and wind tunnel tested by Pininfarina, whose history with Ferrari is almost as old as the marque itself. Cost-no-object engineering produced specifications that still seem state of the art today – such as the carbon fiber and Kevlar reinforced steel space frame chassis. The car’s Evoluzione twin turbocharged and intercooled four-cam port injected V-8 engine was controlled by a race proven Weber-Marelli engine management system. All told, the power plant produced 478 brake horsepower at 7,000rpm and 542 Newton-meters (400 pound-feet) of torque at 4,000 rpm, good for a top speed of 320 km/h (200 mph) and a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in less than four seconds. Ferrari initially proposed a limited run of only about 400 F40s. However, the car’s reception and popularity was such that by the time production ended in 1991, over 1,300 examples had found new owners. Sold new by Maranello Concessionaires on May 22, 1991, this particular F40 was collected from the factory by Mr. and Mrs. Mason Dudley Hugh of Farnham, Surrey. Serviced regularly by Maranello Concessionaires, the car accumulated 3,500 miles before being sold to Mr. Wethasinghe of Rowlands Castle, Hertfordshire in January 1993. In 1998, Mr. Russell Attwood of Bristol purchased the car from dealer Evans Halshaw in Birmingham and owned the F40 until 2004, selling it to its current owner who commissioned a professional restoration by Mike Sterland of MDS Services. Sterland, whose cars have been honored repeatedly by the Ferrari Owner’s Club, had also built Geoff Dixie’s F40, which itself won the UK National Concours. As presented, the beautiful F40 is reportedly virtually perfect in every respect and remains mechanically and cosmetically correct. Having inspected this car, we believe it to be one of the best Ferrari F40 in existence today. Intending to enter the car in various concours events, the owner chose not to drive the car and, as such, it remains in remarkably as-new condition. Twenty years after its introduction, the F40 retains its supercar status and remains in a unique, rarified class with such heavyweights as the McLaren F1. Even after the introduction of the F50 and, more recently, the Enzo, many enthusiasts continue to herald the unmatched driving pleasures afforded by the superlative F40. In drafting its list of the 25 greatest supercars, Automobile Magazine proclaimed, “The F40 is a car that you tame, a car you have to master. It's hugely satisfying and exhilarating to drive fast, even if you may feel a tinge of fear when the turbos come in with a bang”.
