The reigning World Champion, Michael Schumacher, was confirmed as the lead driver and Eddie Irvine was signed as the number two. Schumacher began his Formula 1 career with Jordan and in his first Grand Prix, the 1991 race at Spa, he qualified an impressive seventh on the grid. Benetton was quick to snap up the talented young German and he won back-to-back World Championships with this team in 1994 and 1995. Ferrari had last won the Drivers’ Championship with Jody Scheckter in 1979 and had not won the Constructors’ Championship since 1983. With Schumacher on board the Scuderia hoped to return the legendary team to competitiveness. The Benetton team’s top engineers, Rory Byrne and Ross Brawn, would join Ferrari in 1997 and along with Jean Todt, who joined the team in 1993, a ‘Dream Team’ was created that would break every record in the book. In 1996 Luca di Montezemolo was Ferrari’s Team Principal with Jean Todt as Sporting Director and a technical team that included Giorgio Ascanelli, Paolo Martinelli and Chief Designer, John Barnard, who headed the U.K. based design team. The new car was launched only three weeks before the first race and only tested briefly at Fiorano and Estoril prior to the season opener. The Ferrari F310 was the first V-10 engined car to be built at Maranello and was also the first car to have all the instrumentation incorporated into the steering wheel. It was a distinctive car initially built with a low nose and high mounted, elliptical sidepods. John Barnard explained the design concept. “We have tried to retain many of the qualities of the 1995 car while at the same time enhancing the aerodynamic package - one of the reasons that we have taken so long to finalise the design concept. In that respect, the aerodynamic package has also required a totally new gearbox – still a six-speed transverse unit, but of a totally different design to maximise the wind-cheating possibilities.” A seven-speed box was developed over the season, Schumacher using it for the first time at Monza. At the launch Luca di Montezemolo was buoyant. “Just as a football team doesn’t expect to win a major title immediately the team restructures, we have the same philosophy of making steady progress towards our target of winning the World Championship. Three years ago we were two seconds off the pace of the best cars, now we are up among the best. By having Schumacher as our number one driver we are demonstrating to the world that we are prepared to do everything possible to win. Also we feel ready to make the final leap to success. If we didn’t feel ready, then we wouldn’t have brought the best driver in the world into the team.” 1996 was the beginning of Ferrari’s renaissance. Schumacher finished third in the second race, the Brazilian Grand Prix, and finished second at the Nürburgring and Imola where he put his F310 on the pole. There was another pole at Monaco and in Spain Michael Schumacher took his first victory for Ferrari – and in incredible style. This win is still considered by many as one of his greatest. In wet conditions Michael lapped the whole field up to third place. Edward Asprey, whose company was one of Ferrari’s sponsors, described the victory. “It was a simply staggering drive by Schumacher, we were all stunned by the drama. We had never expected to witness such sheer talent and guts at such close quarters. It was the indisputable proof of Schumacher’s greatness. He just left everyone else standing. It was as though the rain didn’t exist. We celebrated with a serious bottle of champagne on the way back.” There were more pole positions in France and Hungary and then a tremendous late season with victories at Spa and at Monza in front of the jubilant tifosi. After the win in Belgium Jean Todt explained its importance. “Spa was the best win of the season. It was like a breath of fresh air after all the problems. It wasn’t the turning point; it was the most important point. Spa was my favourite win.” After the Monza win Michael Schumacher admitted feeling warmth and emotion that he had never felt before. “It is the best day of my life, Corinna (his wife) is pregnant and I have won at Monza. I’ve never seen so many people and felt so much emotion. I have goose bumps all over me. It is wonderful, everyone in the team deserves it.” The final two races in Portugal and Japan saw a third and a second place. Schumacher’s three Grand Prix victories were more than the team’s total tally for the period from 1991 to 1995. Ferrari finished second in the Constructors’ Championship and Michael was third in the Drivers’ Championship. The Ferrari F310, chassis number 166, presented here is the car that Michael Schumacher drove in his very first race for Ferrari, the 1996 Australian Grand Prix, making this car the first Ferrari F1 car ever driven by Michael Schumacher. Unfortunately, Michael retired on lap 32 with brake problems. Chassis 166 was used as the spare car at both the Brazilian and Argentinian Grand Prix races. This car was then used extensively for testing and development work, mostly at Fiorano and Mugello.
