This Lot is EC taxes paid and originates from Austria 20 years after Ferrari last raced a sports prototype, the factory surprised the world with the announcement of the 333SP in 1993 – the company’s first pure sports-racing car since the Ferrari 312P. Jointly developed with Dallara and designed specifically for the then new IMSA WSC prototype regulations, it was purpose-built as a customer racing car. The impetus for the project was provided by Giampiero Moretti, race driver and founder of MOMO, and Gian Luigi Buitoni, President of Ferrari North America, with the enthusiastic support of Piero Ferrari. The programme was nicknamed “Il Sogno Americano”, the American Dream. (This exposure was very attractive to Maranello as there were no Formula 1 races on American soil at the time.) The 333SP chassis was based closely on the Formula 1 (F92) structure, widened to meet IMSA’s two-seat requirement. Much of the design work for the chassis and body was done in Dallara's wind tunnel. Per regulation, the 333SP featured a flat-bottom chassis. The monococque body was constructed of carbon-fibre composites and an aluminium honeycomb core. The V-12 used was also based upon Ferrari's contemporary F1 engine, with displacement increased to 4.0 litres and featured the novel five valves per cylinder set-up. Completed, the 333SP smartly looked the part – a prototype more than worthy to bear the name Ferrari. Throughout its racing career, various modifications were made to the body, including a longer nose, yet throughout it retained its characteristic look. Apart from its striking appearance and performance, the 333SP will be remembered best because of its noise. With a redline pushing 12,000rpm, the V-12 produced a spectacular high-pitched wail all the way from idle to maximum revolution. After thorough testing late in 1993, the Ferrari 333SP made its racing debut in classic style in 1994 at the IMSA GT Championship at Road Atlanta with a 1-2 finish in this first event. American Jay Cochran drove the winning car, with Moretti the second-place finisher. Later that year a stunning, podium-clearing 1-2-3 finish resulted at Lime Rock. Even though the cars were run by privateers only, three more victories were scored before end of the season. With the revised nose panel, the 333SP was entered in the 1995 Sebring 12 Hours. Victory was also achieved in this legendary race, the first Sebring win for the marque in 23 years. Further conquests were scored in 1995, earning Ferrari the IMSA Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ Championships. In 1996 one of the 333SPs entered in the Le Mans 24 Hours qualified second and set the fastest lap in the race, only to retire after an accident. In 1997 a sixth place overall finish was scored there. Dallara continued to develop and build the model into 1997, at which time construction was taken over by Ferrari tuner Michelotto. This was the version in which Moretti achieved his dream to cap his racing career in a winning Ferrari. In 1998’s opening contest, the 24 Hour race at Daytona, he shared outright victory with Ferrari 333SP co-drivers Mauro Baldi and Didier Theys. Just weeks later, in the 12 Hours of Sebring, the trio’s 333SP finished first again. In 1998, the car found new life in the European races, competing in the International Sports Racing Series (later called FIA Sportscar Championship), winning every race. In America, the car won three rounds in the IMSA Championship (including Sebring) and took Wayne Taylor to second in the final standings, in addition to Ferrari placing second in the Constructors' Championship. By the end of production in 2001, 40 333SPs were built over its remarkable eight-year run, an impressive duration for any prototype racer. The first 14 cars were constructed by Dallara, the next 26 by Michelotto. Many examples were later modified by their owners with revised sides, noses and wings to suit their particular needs, often with help from Michelotto. In the final seasons some chassis were fitted with Judd engines. Presented here is chassis 027, a late production Michelotto example built in 1999. As such, it has been fitted with all the important development updates while retaining its original engine. Sold new in Austria, where it has remained until this day, it has no professional race history but has been enthusiastically enjoyed at club events, most recently at Fiorano where the current and only second owner recently clocked a lap time just a mere second off the track record. Although only sparingly used, this sophisticated and powerful sports racing machine has been carefully maintained and is offered here in excellent condition in all respects, ready for competition on the race track or the show field. Many original spares are included with the car, including an additional tail section, three sets of magnesium rims and other items. The 333SP transformed sports prototype racing during the bleak years following the demise of GTP and set the pace for the open-top prototypes that followed. In doing so it amassed an impressive record of championship wins. This Ferrari exemplifies that rare combination of extreme beauty, breathtaking performance and ultimate finesse.
