It is appropriate that the supercar named Enzo, after the founder of Ferrari, is powered by a new (in 2002), ultra light-weight 6-litre V-12 – it was Il Commendatore’s favourite configuration. The first Ferrari built, the 125 was designed by Gioachino Colombo and was an ambitious V-12 twin-six. In his first autobiography, Le Mie Gioie Terribili (My Terrible Joys), Ferrari explained why he wanted such a complicated engine: “I have always loved V-12 twin-six engines, ever since I saw photographs of the first V-12 twin-six Packard at Indianapolis back in 1914 and the Delage that came in second at Lyons in 1924. I have always loved the sound of the engine and I must confess that it was the fact that at that time only one company in the whole world made V-12 twin-six engines that drove me to imitate them. Some years later Packard stopped making them and I was alone. Many people criticised me and predicted a sad end; they thought the whole experiment too risky and rather presumptuous on my part ” This first Ferrari made its debut in 1947 and the legend that is today’s Scuderia Ferrari was born. This was the beginning of the phenomenon that induced such incredible passion for the red cars from Maranello, particularly the racing cars, which bore the mark of the rampant black horse on a yellow shield with the Italian colours above and the letters “S F” below. The Enzo follows in the tradition of previous limited edition Ferraris – the 288 GTO of 1984, the F40 of 1987 and the F50 of 1995. The Enzo owes much to Formula 1 technology, from its carbon fibre construction to the Formula 1 based gearbox which cuts gearchange times down to 150 milliseconds. Built in a limited run of 399 (plus a few pre-production and special cars), with the 400th car specially constructed and donated to the Vatican, it is an outstanding expression of the concept of extreme performance, developed for road use. The performance goals of the new V-12 engine were to supply a unique blend of very high power, generous torque from low speeds and versatility. These targets were certainly met. The Enzo produces 650bhp, has a top speed of just over 217mph and will do 0–62mph in 3.65 seconds. More than 383 lb-ft of torque is generated at 3,000 rpm thanks in part to variable inlet and exhaust valves, electronic management for each row of cylinders and a drive by wire throttle. Taken together, these features make the engine very responsive and eminently driveable, a genuinely new benchmark for supercars. Ferrari describes the Enzo as, “The concept of the extreme sports car, the highest level of technology and performance that Ferrari can offer its customers for use on the road ” The Enzo is based on the successful transfer of technology developed by their Formula 1 team and their tremendous record of victories in Grand Prix racing. The styling was derived and refined by intense work in the wind tunnel with track and road development given to the capable hands of seven-times World Champion Michael Schumacher, and the Prancing Horse’s own highly experienced test drivers. Never before has the styling of Pininfarina been so directly influenced by its function. Starting from the nose section of the Ferrari Enzo, which is so heavily influenced by Formula 1, the entire body has been studied to ensure optimum airflow for cooling the engine and brakes, while generating high levels of grip-enhancing downforce with minimal aerodynamic drag. Pininfarina was able to create such good ground effects by optimizing underside airflow that the large rear wing required by many supercars is not needed on a Ferrari Enzo. The aerodynamic balance of the car is maintained at speed by automatic adjustments to the position of twin front flaps and a single rear spoiler. The exclusive nature of Ferrari’s “extreme” cars makes ownership the equivalent of joining an exclusive club. Famous names such as actor Nicolas Cage, guitarist Eric Clapton, Jamiroquai’s Jay Kay and Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason all own one; as does Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, and of course Michael Schumacher. Nick Mason, a Ferrari man through and through, said, “To my mind, a great Ferrari is a little like a Fender Stratocaster – it’s not just a guitar, it’s Rock and Roll, it’s Hank Marvin, Eric Clapton or Jimi Hendrix. An instrument in the right hands to get the right results has to take on some element of romance.” The Ferrari Enzo presented here is unique in that it has had one owner from new, a member of a Middle Eastern Royal family, where it formed part of an important collection of supercars. 136085 is also exceptional, in that it was ordered by the current owner in a special colour directly from the Ferrari factory; Matt Titanio 20 Gloss with light brown leather interior (Cuoio 4609).
