This lot has originated in the United States and is present at the sale under a temporary import bond which must be cancelled either by exporting the lot outside of Italy on an approved bill of lading with supporting customs documentation or by paying the applicable VAT and import duties to land the lot in Italy. The 1997 Grand Prix season saw the Ferrari team once again under the capable guidance of Jean Todt but without John Barnard. New Technical Director Ross Brawn and his colleague Rory Byrne were persuaded to join Ferrari from Benetton by Michael Schumacher. Nevertheless, the F310B was the work of Barnard, who described the car conservatively: “This is a fairly conventional, standard F1 car upon which we tried different things with some surprises. I feel very comfortable with this new car and it should be reliable, which is another reason why we have continued using the same gearbox for now. Easy to drive stable and consistent are the qualities we have looked for in this car for 1997.” Michael Schumacher felt much the same way. “We expect reliability, we hope to win more races than we did but to be honest I think we won’t really be able to win the Championship until 1998.” He was wrong; the season saw an epic battle for the Championship between Schumacher and Villeneuve’s Williams, the fight going right down to the wire, culminating at the European Grand Prix at Jerez at the end of October. When the Ferrari F310 made its debut at the start of the 1996 season, it was Schumacher’s first year with the team and the first V-10 Grand Prix car that Ferrari had ever built. Schumacher scored three victories in 1996 and the start of the Ferrari–Schumacher legend was set. With the arrival in 1997 of Ross Brawn as Technical Director and Rory Byrne as Chief Designer the dream team was in place for the first time – the team that would produce a record number of Grand Prix victories, World Championships and Constructors’ titles. Meanwhile for 1997 John Barnard had re-worked the F310, which became the F310B. The F310B first appeared at the 1997 season opener, the Australian Grand Prix. Schumacher immediately showed the potential of the car by qualifying third and finishing a strong second. Over the course of the year the F310B scored 102 points for the Scuderia Ferrari, with pole positions in Canada, France and Hungary, wins at Monaco, Canada, France, Belgium and Japan, and fastest laps at Monaco, France and Britain. The car presented here, Ferrari F310B chassis number 179, is the eighth car of just nine built. It made its first appearance in the hands of Michael Schumacher at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. Chassis 179 was the first of two lighter spec. F310Bs to be built. Initially Schumacher struggled to find a set-up that he liked and for qualifying reverted to the older spec. T-car. He was third fastest. On race day the T-car was set up for wet conditions, with 179 for dry. The race began under the safety car in torrential rain, with Schumacher opting for the T-car. Eddie Irvine raced 179 at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on 7 September; he qualified tenth and finished eighth. The next round of the Championship, the Austrian Grand Prix at the A1-Ring, saw Irvine qualifying eighth but failing to finish the race with this same car. This F310B was sold by Ferrari in 1999 and since then the car has had a continuous and documented history, in the ownership of a handful of prominent collectors. After the penultimate race of the 1997 season, the Japanese Grand Prix, Jacques Villeneuve was racing under appeal after an indiscretion in qualifying. At the end of the race Villeneuve led Schumacher by just a single point as they headed to Jerez for the final round. Following advice from the FIA Williams dropped the appeal before the European Grand Prix. The tables were reversed, with Schumacher now heading into the last race leading the Championship by just one point. Everything was to play for at Jerez and qualifying produced an occurrence unprecedented in Formula 1 Championship history. Villeneuve set his fastest lap first, 1m 21.072s. Schumacher set his best on his second run, exactly the same time as Villeneuve, and then even more amazingly Heinz-Harald Frentzen, in the second Williams, did a 1m 21.072s lap – a three-way tie to three decimal points! The grid would be decided by who set their time first, thus Villeneuve took pole with Schumacher sharing the front row. Schumacher took the lead at the first corner and began to pull away with Frentzen in second place. After the first round of pit stops the previously cautious Villeneuve was up to second and after the second round of stops it was still Schumacher, Villeneuve – but now Jacques began to fight and close the gap. By lap 48 the Williams was all over the rear wing of the Ferrari and Jacques dived down the inside of the Ferrari going into Dry Sack, the sixth corner of the lap. Then the two cars collided. The incident was considered to have been a deliberate attempt by Schumacher to knock Villeneuve out of the race, one of several that would mar Michael Schumacher’s otherwise exemplary career. Villeneuve eventually finished third, his car not too badly damaged, and the Championship was his. Schumacher’s Ferrari was left beached in the gravel trap after the incident and his race was over, as was his Championship.
