Designed by Pinin Farina, the “Boano” and “Ellena” coupés of the late 1950s are generally considered to be Ferrari’s first series-built Grand Touring cars. This overview, along with a thorough model description, is found in Antoine Prunet’s book The Road Cars. These GT cars further developed the Pinin Farina theme of simple, elegant lines and proportions with limited brightwork or trim. A bewildering array of carrozzerie – Allemano, Touring, Vignale, Ghia and Zagato, among others – provided coachwork for early Ferraris. Pinin Farina designed its first Ferrari as early as late 1951 and by the mid-1950s had truly established the Ferrari “look” as exemplified by the Europa/Boano/Ellena GT series. Design cues included the long, low hood and the signature flattened oval radiator opening – traits that by the mid-1950s had secured “Principal Ferrari Design House” status for the Turin firm. Characterised by a low roofline, 66 of this first series, now known as “Boano Coupé” 250s were built by Carrozzeria Boano. At the end of 1957 Mario Boano left his company to set up Fiat’s styling department and his son-in-law Ezio Ellena took over with old partner Luciano Pollo. Thus the renamed Carrozzeria Ellena built a further run of 50 Ferrari 250 GTs, now referred to as Ellena Coupés. As befits a production car, passenger comfort as well as luggage accommodation were much improved from the previous Europa GT model, and panel and trim fit was described in period road tests as “superb”. Also impressive was the performance provided by the famed Colombo-designed V-12, 3.0-litre engine, which produced between 220 and 240 horse depending on its specification. Griff Borgeson’s complimentary January 1958 Sports Cars Illustrated road test of the Richie Ginther Lime Rock race-winning 250 GT, which listed for $10,975, called it a “Grand Touring masterpiece – without comparables – except other Ferraris”. The article goes on to summarise: “Racing car performance with the manners and appointments of a luxury automobile in the grand manner.” The perfect seating position, silence at speed, the fully synchronised transmission, engine flexibility, “rock-like solidity”, predictable handling and “gigantic brakes” further impressed Borgeson, not to mention the styling – which he labelled “contemporary Italian conservative, beautiful without being the least bit gaudy”. Top speed was listed at 200–250km/h (127–157mph) depending on the final drive gear ratio, with the road test car’s 4.57:1 gearing providing a zero to 100km/h time of just 5.9 seconds. Such performance is not surprising since the mechanical specifications of an Ellena – engine, gearbox, rear end, suspension, brakes as well as wheels and tyres are virtually identical to those used on Ferrari’s Berlinetta GT racing car, the Tour de France. Even interior aspects like the steering wheel, instrument panel, gauges and door hardware were identical to its glamorous sister cars of the period, the “TdF” and the LWB California Spyder, many of which owe their lives today to a donation of vital parts from a Boano/Ellena Coupé. This unfortunate reality, coupled with the minimal build numbers, means a very low survival rate for the 250 GT Boano/Ellena series. The example presented here, chassis 0819 GT, is the 26th of the 50 total units produced by Ellena, originally finished in dark red with a tan interior. Delivered new to Hollywood, California, its ownership trail reappears in the early 1970s, as it was sold as a restoration project to John Hajduk’s MotorKraft in Illinois, who himself would sell the car as a long-term ground-up restoration project to two gentlemen from Chicago. In 1990, after years of restoration and little if any road use, 0819 GT was sold to a collector in California. After brief ownership in Japan, the car passed through several hands in Germany, where it has remained ever since, participating in at least five Mille Miglia Storica events. Just last year, the suspension was rebuilt to original specifications, courtesy of Ferrari Classiche, and the leather was retrimmed by specialist Hagen Kruse in Germany. By all accounts, 0819 GT remains a remarkable automobile – a rare and highly collectable Ellena-built 250 GT and a strikingly beautiful example of one of Ferrari’s earliest series-built GT cars.
